    Rick and I completed the online courses for Competent Crew and Day Skipper and then completed the practical courses in Corfu, Gouvia Marina with Corfu Sea School. Steve was our captain/instructor on the 40 foot sailing yacht Alegria July 6th – July 18th 2026. What an experience! We learned the fundamentals of preparing the yacht for sea, deck work, navigation, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, maintenance and repair work, engines, emergency situations, yacht handling under power, yacht handling under sail, passage making, tide, and an introductory night passage! That is what the course said they would teach us and that is exactly what we were taught. I feel confident that Rick and I could handle a small sailing yacht and would have fun doing it!! Mooring in Greece is very different from the way we moor in the US and it took us a while to get the hang of it! Stern in to a stone wall with lazy lines took some skill. I’d like to sail Greece on a chartered yacht during the “off” season, September/October when there aren’t as many tourists around. It would be great to spend more than one afternoon/evening at some of the places we visited. I loved Greece and the entire experience of sailing! I feel fortunate that we were introduced to some picturesque villages and learned how friendly the restaurant owners were. We were able to pick our fresh seafood for dinner. The food was amazing! Thanks for all the advice, Steve. I have always thought of Rick as the captain of our boat and I am first mate, it was good for me to take charge, thanks for all the encouragement and lessons, Steve! I will never forget this experience and hope to go sailing again soon!
